What is the Nike Dunk?

What is Dunk, this question starts this article!

"Isn't Dunk the Dunk SB? That's all to ask?"

I believe many people think that Dunk = Dunk SB. I used to foolishly thought that was the case. But this is not the case. Dunk is not equal to Dunk SB, but there is a "family" blood between them!

#background

The Nike dunk sb was originally a shoe designed (or improved, to be precise) for skateboarding. But by 2004, Dunk SB had become an icon of a trendy era.

Dunk SB has a long history compared to the new basketball shoes released every year. And it's not as ordinary as the actual basketball shoes we usually wear. The full English name of the SB series of shoes is: Nike Dunk Low (Hi) Pro SB (and SB is the abbreviation of "Skate board").

#Dunk Not Dunk SB

In 1985, Dunk, as a professional basketball shoe at the time, first met everyone. In the same year, Nike took advantage of the thriving college basketball atmosphere and adopted Dunk to launch the Be True to Your School series for various sponsored universities. As a result, the color matching of the Dunk upper was eye-catching at the time. Especially orange has been very successful in attracting me!

And at that time, most skateboard shoes used the vulcanization process, but Dunk was different. The outsole of the shoe surrounded the Cup Sole of the entire midsole and was connected to the shoe body by stitching! The craftsmanship is novel, and the shoe colorway is attractive. Because of this, Dunk has a lot of skaters wanting to try it!

However, in 1987, the skateboarding film "The Search for Animal Chin" directed by Stacy Peralta was released, and the Air Jordan 1 became the first choice of countless skaters. In the film, Bones Brigade Team members Steve Caballero, Mike McGill, and Lance Mountain demonstrate the shoes themselves, creating a classic moment in the long history of sneaker culture (and it is worth mentioning that Mark Gonzales is also an Air Jordan 1 supporter).

And Dunk and Air Jordan 1 shoes are very similar, and there is no more such as: cushioning design like Air Jordan 1. At the same time, as a new shoe, Dunk does not have the influence of the former in skateboarding culture. So Dunk gradually "faded"

#Why isn't the Air Jordan 1 becoming a trend in the skateboarding world?

The Air Jordan 1 of that period was really loved. When the Air Jordan 1 hit the market in 1985, it was priced at $65, and because of the hot sale, it once exceeded $100 in the sneaker resale market. Afterwards, Nike increased sales in the market. While expanding sales, it also overdrafted the purchasing power of the market, so there was a phenomenon of oversupply. As a result, the Air Jordan 1 later appeared on the shelves of discount stores.

A lot of Air Jordan 1 stock has started to sell at a price, and the price of $19.99 is a huge benefit for skaters with limited financial ability. (This reminds me of the launch of so many AJ 1 color schemes this year-2018. Although the price is generally high, I no longer have that kind of feeling for me, it is just pure money-making, but I still buy it myself , really fragrant)

Although it occupied the skateboard market, BUT, and later Nike "started to make money again", Air Jordan shoes began to get fatter, and the price has increased significantly, the shoes are "ugly", but the price is higher. Since then, most skaters will naturally stop buying. Even if the AJ 1 was later re-engraved in 1994, but after all, it was not like us in that era, and any re-engraving could easily make money. And no one is bringing the goods, so naturally the skaters still refuse to accept it. Therefore, Air Jordan 1 is still not on the throne of the king of skateboard shoes!

In 2002, Nike pinned its last hope of making a big splash in the skate world on former alpine skier Sandy Bodecker. During its 36 years at Nike, it dominated Nike Foot Ball, Breaking2, and Nike SB, which would later be known as a skateboarding legend. Maybe he wasn't as well known as Brian Anderson or Reese Forbes, but he was the man who set the direction for NIKE SB. Sandy added shock-absorbing Zoom Air to the Dunk, and added some padding to the tongue, all of which skateboarders want. There is a lot of fun in the design of the colors, making it suitable for athletes. And that became the Nike SB Dunk we see today.
